5 Fail-Proof Tips to Maintain your New Year’s Resolution

Already getting lazy about your new year’s resolutions? Don’t worry about it.

I have rounded up my five favorite fool-proof strategies to maintaining your new year’s resolution, which have been tried and test by yours truly, a notorious new years resolution maker and breaker.

Over the years I have had only a few successful new year’s resolutions and through the years have compiled WHY they were successful and what you can do to make yours a success:

1. Be patient with yourself

Don’t stress yourself out about not getting your resolution done in a month or if you feel like you keep failing at it. Listen to what your body or mind are telling you, give yourself a break, and keeping going. Resolutions are supposed to be improvements to your life, not burdens.

2. Set realistic goals and expectations

Know what you are capable of in your given time frame. The worst thing you can do is set yourself up for failure from the very beginning. For example, one year I tried to go to the gym six days a week. SIX! I should have known I would get busy, lose motivation, or just be plain sore going to the gym that often. Plus, I don’t need to go to the gym that often to be healthy or see results. A reasonable and realistic number would have been more like 3-4 days a week. Or better yet (following the tip above) just simply going to the gym more! When you feel like you are failing or you can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel you are more likely to quit. Set realistic expectations for yourself and succeed them.

3. Don’t put a number on it

My most successful new year’s resolutions have been when I don’t give myself a strict number. My favorite example is my new year’s resolution from last year: “to read more.” I didn’t set an unrealistic number like 30 books a year, I simply told myself I wanted to read MORE. I looked at how much I read the year before and even if it was one more book I would happy. With that mentality, I managed to read more in a year than I ever had before. Plus, isn’t that the idea? To become a better version of yourself. Work out MORE. Eat HEALTHIER. Spend MORE time with family. Be better then the person you were yesterday or last year. It’s full-proof I tell you.

Even if you’re six months into the year and haven’t even given your new year’s resolution from back in January a second thought, it’s not too late. We all get busy, but it is not an excuse not to finish what we set out to do. Why is it that we think we failed at keeping our resolution when the year isn’t even over? Even if it’s mid-November and you told yourself you’d start going to the gym in 2017, GO!

5. Remember the reason you started

Changing your mentality about new year’s resolutions is important. Do it because you want to improve your life, find happiness, get healthier, excel in your career. Whatever your reason for starting your new year’s resolution, remember it when you begin to lose motivation.

Here are my 2017 New Years Resolutions:

  • Read More (I loved this resolution so much last year I am doing it again!)
  • Be more mindful
  • Be inspired and find happiness in the life you live
  • Continue to live an active and healthy lifestyle
  • Be creative and artistic
