How to Set Goals You Can Achieve

Now I know not everyone is into new year resolutions and goal setting, and that is okay, this post isn’t for you. This post is for those who, no matter how many times they fail, they keep setting new goals. I truly believe in the quote “shot for the moon” and land among the stars.”

Maybe you set your goal too high, maybe you ran out of time, or maybe life just got in the way. But the thing is if you never set the goal in the first place you would be nowhere near where you are now, even if you’re not at the finish line you are closer then when you started.

I have put together key tips and trick on how to set goals you can actually achieve.

Goal Setting

Set Realistic Goals

Know what you are capable of in your given time frame. The worst thing you can do is set yourself up for failure from the very beginning. Figure out what areas of your life you really want to focus on and then think about how much time you have to dedicate to each of your goals. If you don’t feel as though you have enough time maybe you can set goals that will give you more time in your day like using your phone less, only checking your e-mail 2-3 times a day, or waking up and hour earlier.

Be Specific

Think about when, where, and how you are going to achieve your goals. Set specific and measurable goals. They should also be realistic and attainable. It is really easy to slip up or forget what your goal was if you don’t make keep these two factors in mind when creating your goal in the first place.

Always Track your Progress

The thought behind this is that if a goal is not measurable, it is not possible to know whether you are making progress towards completing your goal. Make sure you set up benchmarks for your goal ahead of time to keep yourself motivated and on track.

Be Patient with Yourself

Don’t stress yourself out about not getting your goal done in the first month. Goal are supposed to be long-term changes and improvements to your life, relationships, and business. These kinds of changes take time and goals are what help us get there and ensure we are on track. So, Listen to what your body or mind are telling you, give yourself a break, and get back up and keeping going.

Remember: Your Goals will Change

As you work towards a goal you might find that it is not improving your life or business as much as you thought it would. Maybe you realize you were focused on the wrong thing or that it takes up too much time or your simply not seeing a return on your investment, whether it is time, energy, or money.

It is important to evaluate your goals every once and while, if you’re on track and have been consistently working towards your goal but are not seeing the intended results it might be time to reevaluate the goal and set a new one!

I like that you included the bit about goals changing. All too often, I’ll set a goal but then need to reevaluate it once I actually start tackling it. It’s like how at work, an approach to a project may need to change once you have more information or the client changed their mind.
